Vancouver – October 7, 2025 – Representing over 1,000 builders, contractors, and trades, the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) applauds the province for acting on prompt payment legislation – turning years of advocacy into real momentum toward a fairer, faster, and more resilient construction economy.
For years, late payments have strained cash flow, delayed projects, and created unnecessary risk throughout the construction supply chain. With today’s announcement, the government takes an important step toward changing that.
In British Columbia today, the construction industry contributes over $29 billion annually to the provincial economy. The Lower Mainland alone accounts for an estimated 60 per cent of all construction activity, representing $71.5 billion in proposed projects and $64 billion in current projects. Behind these numbers are the people who contribute to the built environment – thousands of contractors, tradespeople, and suppliers whose livelihoods depend on timely and reliable payment for the work they do every day.
“Prompt payment legislation is more than policy, it’s about progress and respect,” said Jeannine Martin, President of VRCA. “It ensures the people who build our communities can count on being paid fairly and on time. This is a major step toward a healthier, more sustainable industry for everyone – from large firms to the small and medium-sized contractors who are the backbone of B.C.’s economy.”
The VRCA emphasizes that what happens next will matter most – turning the legislation into clear, practical rules and making sure the adjudication process is efficient and easy to navigate for everyone in the industry.
“Introducing the bill isn’t the finish line, it’s the foundation,” said Martin. “We look forward to collaborating with the BCCA, province, and industry partners to ensure this legislation delivers real, measurable impact where it matters most: on the job site.”
The VRCA also recognizes and applauds the leadership of BC Construction Association (BCCA) President, Chris Atchison, whose years of tireless advocacy and collaboration with government and industry partners were instrumental in bringing this long-awaited legislation to life.
